We were so excited to dip our toes into a new body of water. And the Mediterranean was just what the doctor ordered. We walked over to the beach after visiting the aquarium. It was supposed to be a 20min walk, but turned out to be more like 40min, due in part to a map that wasn't quite to scale. It was on this walk to the beach that Eight informed us he liked Valcencia only about 25-30%. Sliding down rocky highway imbankments tend to affect your outlook on things. Once we made it to the beach and had some ice cream, dispositions were greatly improved and we headed for the water. The kids kicked off their shoes first thing and commented on how powdery the sand was. Then, of course, they had to wade into the water, bathing suits be darned! This little recon mission was well worth the trip. If we hadn't decided to check out the beach that night, we would hae missed the amazing light of sunset. I could see why artists have been so taken with the way the sunlight casts a magical glow across the waters of the Mediterranean. I immediately thought of the paintings of spanish impressionist
Joaquin Sorolla, with Victorian ladies strolling along the beach and little boys rolling around in the surf. The Med really did seem magical at sunset with its subtle hues of pink and blue. I also loved the hazy silhouette of the mountains in the distance....

We happened upon these sandscapes of an alligator and a bull...

One of surprisingly few hotels along the beach...
Still plenty of people out enjoying their time by the sea...

We came back the next morning...with bathing suits...for a few hours of dedicated beach time. The light? Still amazing. I don't know why it seems so different to me than other beaches I've been to, but everythiing really did seem to glow.
